Akiyo Fujii
Deputy General Counsel for Business Affairs
Akiyo Fujii joined the Office of University Counsel in January 2014. She specializes in representing Tufts University on transactional, intellectual property and compliance matters, including assisting the Procurement Department, the Office of Vice Provost for Research, the Office of the Technology Transfer and Industry Collaboration, the Advancement and the Operations Division. She also advises various Schools in connection with their international programs, affiliations, exchange arrangements, dual degree programs and course developments matters.
Ms. Fujii joined Tufts University from Edwards Wildman Palmer LLP (formerly known as Palmer & Dodge LLP and now known as Locke Lord LLP) where she served as Corporate Senior Counsel. In that position, she advised clients on a wide range of complex financial transactions, represented private companies on legal, strategic and operational needs and intellectual property protection issues. She specialized in representing non-profit entities including colleges and universities, health care institutions and community organizations. She also advised tax-exempt entities on compliance issues, conflict of interest matters, reporting requirements and endowment policies. She is very knowledgeable in non-profit corporate governance issues.
From 1988-1996, Ms. Fujii worked at Ropes & Gray as a corporate associate. She is a graduate of Harvard University and New York University School of Law. She clerked for the Honorable Francis D. Murnaghan, Jr., of the Federal Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
